a glimpse at my creative process

this sketch was inspired by a small sculpture i came across at the santa barbara museum of art. the piece, by gaston lachaise, is carved from black stone and not very big - no more than a foot in diameter. its bulbous form inspired me so i gave it a try as a painting.

i ended up submitting the final painting in a juried competition at santa barbara city college's atkinson gallery for their "small images" show in 2007. not only was the piece selected from a couple hundred entries, but it was awarded second in the 2-dimensional category! my first award. woot.
