alice neel: andy warhol, 1970
its a no brainer that alice neel is one of our greatest contemporary portraitists. the candidness and rawness she captures in her subjects is further emphasized in her painterly style. i love the unfinished quality of this painting: the raw canvas, the roughly sketched lines where she doesn't fill in.
andy warhol appears shirtless and tired with a scarred abdomen. that and his hiked up tighty-whiteys, make him feel like a real person - not the iconic art god as he is usually portrayed.
alice: you rock.
